The beginning of MIEM’s SDB

Jasin and the member of the squad, brigade leader of concreters and the 3-d year student of radio technical faculty Igor Crock. The idea of creation an independent  self-supporting sub-unit in the institute (SDB) was formed in the conversation.

Evgenii Viktorovich Armenskii almost literally said: “Search for customer and in case if you find it, there will be an order for institute, we will give you a room near rector’s office and a basement in a house next door. All new things must begin in a basement”. Probably, even in this times he knew the history of beginning of Studying Group of Rocket Propulsion (SGRP), that began in the basement  of the house near metro station”Chistie Prudi” and then became a design bureau  named after C. P. Korolev.

Commands in pairs went to search a customer in the proper sense of the word. Near metro station they came to Knitted combine. When the director of the combine M. S. Shkurin was reported, that two students from SDB of Moscow Institute of Electronic Mechanical Engineering asked to meet with him, he gave a command to lead them immediately to his cabinet.




After first minutes of acquaintance, he told, that thanks to his own friendship with A. N. Kosigin from student’s time, combine bought in England the most modern Knitting machine with electronic control and programmed pattern. Suits were made on this machine for USSR’s national team. Machines have already worked good for a year. And if something got out of control in mechanics, then his “kulibins” handled with it. If something stopped working in electronic, we had to phone in England, to order, pay in currency and wait. He asked them if it was possible to make several samples of electronic block on domestically produced details? Crock and Smirnov said that it was possible.

The main help in realization of first requirements specification was provided by pro-rector responsible for science B. N. Mozgevelov. As a former employee of USSR Ministry of Radio Industry he made an agreement with ministry, that all guides for English and domestic components would be shown to the students. Simultaneously, he suggested asking for help to I. I. Litvak, who became their adviser.

On the second meeting Crock and Smirnov asked to go with them I. I. Litvak “for preventability”, but warned him accidentally not to say, that abbreviation “SDB” begins from the word “Student”

So the first agreement was signed and first requirements specification was received for designing and manufacturing five electronic controlled blocks for knitting machines. This work was given to team consist of I. Crock, E. Lazarev, S. Smirnov, N. Sharova, V. Knizgnic. The work was curates by “Military chair” (Yasin O. V.) and chair “Designing and technology of radio technical means” (N. E. Svatikova).

When two weeks past, they carried maquette of electronic block on domestically produced details to the manufacture. It was assembled on the desk of classrooms table with ”highest” approval of economic section pro-rector N. V. Bogdanov. Machete successfully worked for a week on manufacture, whereupon working drawings were made. MIEM’s experienced workers manufactured 5 blocks by this working drawings.

Just after the real tests of first block were finished, requirements specification and agreement on creation of 60 blocks of electronic control for knitting machine was signed. This work was made  by second team  of students in consist of L. Kozlin, G. Putilov, S. Zgukov, K. Djachenko.

Successful tests of the second block were estimated by director of knitting combine M. S. Shkurin. He believed in creation possibility of MIEM’s students and suggested, following the time of spirit, to take up a problem of all-round automation of combine management and to struggle with misappropriation of row materials (wool) and complete products. This huge work was made by third student’s team in consist of I. Gurevich, I. Dobkin and another students. In some periods of time  up to 300 people were participated in this theme, which take a photo of real flow of documents on combine in summer time. As result of performance of this work (it lasted for 3 years) one of the main participants was distributed to the combine and at once appointed vice director for automation.

From the beginning of 1966 under scientific direction of I. I. Litvak was developed a line of works under creation of informational display facilities for ground-based space-flight control. As a results of these operations the degree works and Ph.D. thesises   were defended by I. Crock, E. Lazarev, M.Gustajakov, S. Specov. All of them received State Prizes.

Since 1967 under scientific direction F. T. Aleksandrova was developed works in the area of semi-conductor mechanical engineering, wherein B. L’vov, A. Tikhonov, D. Bikov and many other students were an active participants. In 1972 the volume of scientific researches and engineering works of SDB MIEM came to 30% from  all-institute.

However, in this years the development of SDB was not characterized only by increasing volumes of realized NIOKR, but also as an organization of students scientific researches. The work of SDB MIEM was marked by prize of Moscow Komsomol and Lenin’s Komsomol.

In SDB MIEM hundreds of MIEM’s students began their scientific career. Many of them became noted scientists and statesmen.  Unfortunately in the beginning of 90-th years of our age  these positions were partly missed. However, in spite of huge problems, SDB continued its work for attracting students to the scientific work. A great help in it was provided by institute. So, even having a small financing of university science, MIEM assigned means on students grants. It was possible due to the rector of university, doctor of technical science, professor D. V. Bikov, who was a member of SDB MIEM.

In recent years SDB of new type became to form on institute’s chairs. Their task isn’t only to involve  students in scientific researches, but to create innovative product, commercialize and promote it on the market ,to  teach students how to use it, to  get grants from different founds,  to write scientific articles and publications,  to defend their own scientific positions, to hold a discussion directly.

For realization of this task in 2003 year on MIEM’s chair of “Computer engineering” together with RGUITP, NO BFPNO “Found Armenskiy” and found “FOBINN” was  established SDB “InnoTeh”. It served as an example for creating such SDB on another chairs. A big number of such SDB chairs with time overgrow in an independent companies.(ITSoft, KOMMEK and so on).

But for all advantages of such SDBs, their   entrance to the market significantly limited the possibility of attracting MIEM’s students to the scientific work. That’s why in 2007 on base of SDB MIEM was made “Students innovative scientific centre” (SINC)

The task of the Centre is  to realize a wide spectrum of scientific researches  and engineering works made by students, candidates for a master degree and postgraduate students of Moscow State Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (technical university). Leading MIEM’s scientists specialized in different areas of science and technics is attracting to manage this works.

Such approach allows SINC to make different knowledge-consumptive works, including scientific researches  and engineering works on priority directions of science and technics development with the participation  of program winners “The participant of youth scientific- innovative competition” (PYSIC)
